Maggots work best for all small fish in rivers, during daylight hours. Worms work reasonably well day fishing, but are by far the best for night fishing rivers, where you can catch just about any species of fish, usual being Eels, Chub, Ruff, Perch and Pike, and even Carp. Bread rolled into a small ball to fit on an 18 hook will work very well with Rudd up to 4lb+, Bread crusts that are floated or sunk on a float are very often taken by Chub, especially when they are placed under a tree. Cheese is another thing used for Chub fishing; I have not used any myself but have heard other anglers that swear by it. Ground baiting a swim is what match anglers usually do, you don't see many fisherman that go fishing for a couple of hours do any ground baiting what so ever, but when they are seen to be using ground baits, it will usually be a powder based bait. River fish tend to like this type of bait because of the way it disperses in the water, trout pellets are good also, because by throwing a couple of handful's out, and legering over the top, they will start to break down and fizz in the water, and then the water gets very cloudy and the fish come in and frenzy, this is a good way to make your fishing session more productive. Another favourite is hemp from a tin, this stuff is very oily and fish seem to love it. |
