Monday, 11th January, 2010 - New World Record 94lb Mirror Carp

Angler catches 94lb carp in the ice Ice-cool angler Martin Locke braved sub-zero temperatures to break the world record for hooking the biggest ever carp. Wearing only a T-shirt, Mr Locke, 47, jumped out of his tent at 6am in temperatures of -3ºC (27ºF) to net the fish that tipped the scales at 42.6kg (94lb). The mighty mirror carp weighed the same as Kylie Minogue and beat the previous record by 1.4kg (3lb) The fish was the first and only bite that father-of-two Mr Locke had during his week-long trip to the freezing Rainbow Lake near Bordeaux, France. ‘I jumped up wearing only my T-shirt,’ he said. ‘It was -3ºC and everything was frozen. I got the boat into the water and followed my line with a torch. When I tried to bring it in it was like I’d got a brick wall on the line. ‘I thought I must have got my hook caught on an old log or dead tree trunk,’ added Mr Locke from Dartford, Kent. ‘Then I realised it was just a fish when it came to the surface. I was shaking when I saw it. ‘I thought, ‘‘How am I going to get that in the net?’’ It was like trying to land a hippo with a tennis racket. It was so cold but the adrenaline kept me going.’
