The B.A.C.C - Charles Burrell High School 2006
The GMB Union and Breckland Angling Coaching club have been building on the success they had in 2005, as part of a programme within schools. Charles Burrell High school was approached in April 2006 to consider a programme of education based activities around angling within the school. A plan was submitted and sent to the LEA, which was approved. Funding for the five week course came from Norfolk county Councils YISP unit based in Norwich. Over the five weeks the basic aim was to improve the aspirations of the youngsters, to develop team working, to develop better social skills, to refocus back into learning at a higher level. Blended, as part of the programme was to use laptop computers with digital cameras. The youngsters had to still use the day as a curriculum based activity, so writing skills where embedded. The pupils had to write about the day’s experience on every session they attended. Photographs were taken and then introduced into the activity that was recorded like a live diary. Already great strides have been made with improvements in handing in schoolwork and eagerness to learn. One lad was asked to write a couple of paragraphs about one of the days and handed in 3 A4 sheets of written work, something he probably has never done before. Other skills introduced were some simple maths relative to the activity. When kids are interested they really switch on and understand and learn better. At the end of the five weeks all those that successfully completed the programme received certificates and medals. One outstanding pupil received a trophy for his commitment and attitude.
