Distribution:An Asian species, populations are now present across England and Wales. Established populations now apparent across most of Europe.
Features:Absence of barbules around the mouth. Deeply forked tail. Straight/ concave dorsal fin outline. Strongly serrated anal fin spine. Continuous lateral line. Maximum size 59cm, usual size 20 to 30cm.
Potential Impacts On Native Fisheries:
Competition: Will compete with native fish for spawning habitat and food. Readily hybridises.
Habitat destruction: Can impact on water quality, increase turbidity and reduce macrophyte cover.
Disease transmission: Can host non-native parasites.
Predation:It will eat fish eggs.
Natural Balance: Hybridisation with true Crucian carp can reduce native stocks of Crucian.
