Big Sea Fish

">23 May 2012

At 4ft 9in long and weighing 91lb 15oz, it's one big fish. So big, in fact, that this cod is the largest ever to be caught in European waters.

Beating the previous record by 15oz, it is said to be enough to make more than 150 fish and chip suppers and is worth £700.

It was reeled in by angler Morten Hvam off the island of Soroya in the Norwegian Sea. He said: 'This is an Eldorado for sea fishing that has to be experienced.'

Proud: Lucky angler Marten Hvam has recently broken the record for the biggest cod caught in Europe, with a specimen that measured 4ft 9ins long and tipped the scales at 91lbs 15ozs

Many more gigantic cod have been caught this year weighing more than 60lbs, about three times the size of specimen fish caught in UK waters.

Fishermen Troels Bill and Jakob Lindberg, from Denmark, both caught two weighing 67lbs each.

Over the last couple of years British anglers have travelled north for the chance to land such big fish using the sustainable rod and line method.

One company that runs angling trips to Norway has seen its business more than double in the last two years.

Paul Stephens, of Angling Direct Holidays, said: 'Cod in British waters aren't allowed to grow to any decent size because they are trawled to death by the British, French and Spanish.

'The thing with trawlers is that the nets gets lots of other fish that end up as wastage and that is not sustainable.

'Countries like Norway can rule their waters which is why a lot of cod fishing is done using rod and long line.

'There are plenty of cod left there they are allowed to grow to big sizes.

'We arrange fishing holidays in north Norway and have been going for seven years but we have seen our custom double over the last two years or so.

'But this year has been the best by far.'

Martin Founds, of Anglers World Holidays, added: 'This is without doubt the best big cod fishing in the world
