Description: Nestled in the lap of the quiet Devon countryside, beneath the beauty of the Haldon Hills, this hidden gem has become a haven for anglers and wildlife alike. Sit quietly for long enough and you will doubtless be joined by wrens, wagtails and kingfishers.
Home Farm Fishery in Mamhead was the brainchild of Fred Williams. Built in 1972, he dreamed of owning a coarse fishing lake that complimented the surrounding countryside and attracted wildlife. By planting poplar trees, Fred created his sancutary, hidden from view and providing protection from the worst of the elements.
Over the years it has attracted a loyal following, whilst still retaining the peace and tranquility Fred sought. Following the sad death of Fred in August 2015, it fell to his son Glen to take up the reins and run the business. Since then he has worked tirelessly to continue his father's legacy. New swims and platforms have been constructed, along with a soakaway dug in so the banks don't flood and the pond fill with silt.
Animal welfare has always been at the heart of Fred's philosophy and that view is strongly shared by Glen. We take the welfare of our fish very seriously. They are checked regularly for signs of disease or ill health and any that are below par are placed into the nursery pond to recuperate and are only released back into the main pond when they're 100% healthy. Barbed hooks are forbidden, landing nets are mandatory and anyone caught mishandling the fish are banned for life.
