Description: Frogmore fisheries are located in Beningfield Drive between St Albans and Radlett in the shadows of the once highly respected and well known Handley Page aerodrome. This aerodrome was well known for its manufacture and test flights of the Victor Bomber and Jetstream aircraft until its demise in the mid sixties when the site became an industrial park and more recently site of the controversial proposed Helioslough freight terminal project.
Overview The Frogmore fisheries have been looked after by the Verulam AC since the late fifties following some exploratory works by Redlands to extract gravel from the site which resulted in a series of lagoons. These lagoons were stocked with fish and for many years provided some challenging sport for our members. In the early nineties around the time of the M25 construction, the fishery suffered quite badly with water retention which lead the club to refurbish two of the fisheries that we have on site. Unfortunately today only the match lake is capable of holding water through clay lining and Tony's lake which is a mature old pit to the rear of the site. Match Lake The match lake is feature rich with reed fringed margins and islands all of which attract the fish. The far end of the lake is somewhat deeper than the end nearest the main car park. This lake holds a good head of fish and you can expect large catches of Bream and Carp. There are good numbers of Roach, Rudd, F1's, Skimmers and the Roach in particular grow to a good size. There are occasional Tench, Crucians and some large Perch too. Large multiple catches are fairly commonplace with a sensible approach using baits such as pellet, corn, meat and maggots and when the weather is right surface fishing can be effective for the Carp. This fishing here can be excellent with the right approach. Tony's Lake Tony's lake is quite different in character to the Match Lake. Tony's is generally somewhat clearer and is heavily weeded, screaming Tench! During the summer it is advisable to clear some of the weed to give a clean patch to fish and to draw the inquisitive Tench into the swim. There are lots of Tench to be caught providing some excellent sport up to 6lb. There is also an abundance of Roach and Rudd to 1lb offering great sport even during the winter months. There are also some lovely true Crucians. The fisheries are maintained by a dedicated group of fishery officers and the site also has toilets available which are cleaned on a regular basis. |
